With the majority of private sector defined benefit (“DB”) pension schemes closed to new joiners, and increasingly closed to future benefit accrual, DB pension schemes have a finite life. Trustees and sponsors are increasingly considering new strategies as to how they manage a pension scheme to its end point. These strategies reflect that the scheme will be maturing over time, will become increasingly cashflow negative and will need to be funded to ensure all members’ pension benefits can be paid in full.
