Over the next five years, the UK's DC and Mastertrust market will undergo significant consolidation, with a focus on fewer, larger pension schemes. Driven largely by regulatory changes, this shift will require greater market consolidation. The growing need for hyper-automation, supported by STP, APIs, and AI, will be critical. Technology will serve as a crucial enabler, allowing providers and trustees to focus on real differentiation.

Increasing regulatory focus with the introduction of Value For Money framework, the launch of Pension Dashboard and the drive for greater member support at retirement puts additional pressure demands on pension administration teams. Pension providers and their administrators must address three key challenges: governance, ensuring high-quality scheme data, and scaling operational efficiency.

Through real-life examples, we will show how end-to-end automation enhances administration and delivers better outcomes for members and providers.

As the pensions landscape continues to evolve, many people are now having to make complicated pension choices. For someone who is vulnerable, those choices can be especially challenging to navigate. With an increasing number of people relying on DC benefits, and an ageing population, there could be a greater need for trustees to support vulnerable members in the future. This session will look at what makes a person vulnerable, what the law currently requires, and how this might generate new trustee duties.

Low engagement in pension planning is leading to sub optimal outcomes for members. The post-retirement journey is complex, and a one-size-fits-all approach does not suffice. This session will discuss a framework for investing in post-retirement, highlighting three main pathways that members can take to access their retirement savings. We will also explore how schemes can incorporate individualisation by blending different investment approaches, ensuring that personal needs, income, and risk are managed holistically and appropriately for each scheme member.

Sackers
- Partner

I have worked in pensions for over 25 years, providing legal advice to trustees, IGCs, employers and providers. My aim is always to provide practical and commercial advice, particularly in relation to complex and technical legal areas. I also enjoy working in a team alongside other advisers to get the best results for clients.

I have a special interest in the development and management of DC arrangements but I have also spent many years acting for DB schemes and dealing with their issues too.

The pensions industry needs to work closely together especially during times of significant change. I am keen to volunteer to help wherever I can and have a history of involvement with various initiatives that impact on new legislation and regulation. I am currently Chair of PASA’s working group that is focused on CDC and a founding member of the DC Governance Group which established the PLSA’s template chair’s statement for DC schemes.

I regularly speak at conferences organised by bodies such as the PMI and SPP and write articles and blogs for pensions publications.

My role as the Managing Partner of Sackers also gives me insight into some of the challenges and decisions involved in running a business – in this case, my experience comes from running a law firm based in London, but some of the principles will be common to many other walks of life. I find this really helpful to bear in mind when advising clients as it means I can consider their position from a business perspective and not just as a lawyer.
