ESG and Investment Forum 2022

The PMIs annual ESG & Investment Forum will bring together experts in the fields of sustainability, impact investment, TCFD and stewardship to discuss the latest developments in ESG for the pensions industry. We will also have input from outside the world of pensions to hear about the environmental challenges facing communities and wildlife because of climate change.

The forum will be an opportunity to share knowledge and expertise to help grow sustainability within the industry and to network with leaders in the ESG space. We look forward to creating a platform for in-depth and constructive discussions in this topical and fast-moving area.

In recent years there has been a significant increase in the ESG requirements on pension scheme trustees – particularly in relation to disclosure and governance. We are increasingly seeing the potential for broader compliance requirements with additional ESG considerations coming under the spotlight such as the Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures, DWP’s upcoming taskforce on social factors, Diversity Equity & Inclusion considerations, the Just Transition, and Sustainability Disclosure Requirements - to call out a handful of examples. In this session we’ll explore where we are today, what these broader areas are, and what they could mean for pension schemes.

The key to building a climate risk framework is access to robust data alongside a clear approach in how this information will inform decision-making on areas such as ‘net zero targets’ or other climate-related objectives that a scheme or trustees may have. We’ll explore what robust data looks like and why pension schemes need data at both an individual holding and overall portfolio level to properly assess risks and opportunities. We’ll also look at some of the approaches used to evaluate climate risk from a pension scheme’s investments.

Pensions ESG compliance obligations are now coming from a variety of directions: guidance, investment principles, implementation, consultant objectives and climate change disclosures, to name but a few.  Is there a common theme across these obligations that can help us take a broader and more value-additive perspective?

Climate aware bond portfolio

Increasingly schemes are considering how they can build climate aware corporate bond portfolios. This is no longer a case of simply looking to avoid climate-related damage to portfolio returns but also whether the issuers and sectors a portfolio invests in are compatible with Paris alignment. Here we are introduced to the three most commonly used approaches to analyse portfolios, estimating carbon emissions of portfolios into the future, analysing the extent of Paris-alignment of the underlying investments and assessing the Implied Temperature Rise of portfolios. We then discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each approach highlighting the implications for portfolio returns.

In 2023 we are paying attention to four ESG themes that can help clients to navigate the various complexities. Amid a challenging data landscape and a growing – regulatory and otherwise - focus on investors’ sustainability preferences, we want to have better conversations on all things ESG. Other key themes include the social aspect of ESG, the importance of climate adaption and biodiversity, and better understanding the divergent ESG regulations across the globe.

Our planet is facing an acute crisis due to the loss of biodiversity, with a rapid decline in species, natural ecosystems and genetic diversity. With trillions of dollars of economic activity relying directly on natural capital and healthy ecosystems, the impact of biodiversity loss is financially significant and irreversible. As a result, biodiversity is quickly moving up political and corporate agendas, but what actions can asset owners take to address the biodiversity crisis?
This session will explore key biodiversity issues, the implication of biodiversity loss for asset owners and how stewardship can help address these issues.

TCFD remains a key area of focus for pension scheme trustees. Many pension schemes are now within the scope of the TCFD requirements for the first time and are grappling with their first year of compliance, while authorised master trusts and larger schemes are taking stock of their approach over the last year and adapting for future years of compliance.

In this session, we will recap on the key requirements of the TCFD regulations on pension schemes, consider the lessons learned in the last year, explore some of the key challenges being faced and look to the future in this area.

ESG in pensions has sometimes been labelled a box ticking exercise not going far enough to meet net zero targets. On the other hand, impact investment has also been criticised for failing to put member interests first. This debate will allow trustees to consider which approach is more appropriate for their individual scheme and members.
